Chez Maman opened in December 1994 at 7 rue des Grands Carmes, a small street in the centre of Brussels, a short walk from the Grand Place and from rue du Marché au Charbon. It is the city’s best known drag venue and a must for anyone looking for a gay bar in Brussels with a show.
The bar is tiny, standing room only, and the performers famously do their numbers on the bar itself, very close to the audience. Regular nights take place on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays, from 9:30pm, with no reservation and an entry fee of 10 euros, except on special evenings. Arrive early: the room fills up fast and you may have to wait at the door.
Once or twice a month, on a Thursday or a Sunday, Chez Maman also hosts seated cabaret evenings at 20 euros, which must be booked online through the bar’s agenda. Since 2021 the artistic direction has been in the hands of Sugar Love, one of the house queens, who took over from the founder.
