The town council of Puerto de la Cruz organises the International Carnival of Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast of Tenerife, one of the most gay-embraced carnivals in the Canary Islands. It is best known for the Mascarita Ponte Tacon, the men's high-heel race that has run since 1990 and become the image of the town's carnival.
