Description

Prinz Eisenherz, often simply called Eisenherz, has been selling gay and lesbian literature since 1978 and is regarded as the oldest queer bookshop in Germany. Since 2014 it has been based on Motzstraße, in the middle of Schöneberg’s gay village and a few minutes from Nollendorfplatz. For anyone looking for a gay bookshop in Berlin, it is the obvious address, and it has received one of the main awards of the German Bookshop Prize.

The shelves cover novels, biographies, comics, children’s and young adult titles, trans and lesbian selections, with plenty in English and other languages beside German. The shop also stocks films on DVD and a choice of second-hand rarities. It works as a small cultural venue too: the Dramaqueens discuss a novel in German once a month, and the Village Book Club meets every two months for an English-language discussion that is free and open to all. Readings and art exhibitions complete the programme.

Eisenherz is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm, and on Advent Sundays in the afternoon.
