The Drag Queen Gala is the night the whole resort waits for. Staged on a giant outdoor stage at the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Ingles, it turns the commercial centre that anchors the area’s gay nightlife into an open-air theatre of colossal costumes and towering heels, cheered on by a crowd that is overwhelmingly LGBTQ+. It is one of the great drag nights of the Canarian winter, and its setting makes it feel like the gay community’s own carnival gala.
Because the Yumbo is the centre of gay Maspalomas year-round, the gala has a home-team atmosphere you do not get at the bigger city carnivals. The bars and terraces around the stage fill early, and the whole complex becomes one long party before and after the contest.
The 2027 carnival takes “World of Toys” (Un mundo de juguetes) as its theme, voted for by the public. Across two weeks the programme runs through the election of the carnival queen, the drag gala, the great Cabalgata parade and the closing Burial of the Sardine. Held every year since 1974 and recognised as a Fiesta of Regional Tourist Interest, the Maspalomas carnival has drawn crowds well past 400,000 in recent editions.
The setting is part of the appeal: the carnival sits minutes from the Maspalomas dunes and the beaches, so days on the sand roll straight into nights of parades and drag. Few carnivals combine winter sun, a world-famous gay resort and a genuine street party quite so easily.
The Maspalomas carnival has grown alongside the resort itself. What began in the mid-1970s as a modest local fiesta now stretches across two weeks and pulls visitors from all over Europe, its drag gala in particular becoming a fixture of the international gay calendar. The town council leans into that reputation, and the Yumbo’s central role means the LGBTQ+ community is not merely welcomed but woven into the fabric of the event. Add the reliable winter sunshine and the setting beside the dunes, and it is easy to see why the closing carnival of the Canarian season has become such a magnet for gay travellers chasing one last burst of colour before spring.
Maspalomas Carnival 2027 runs from 2 to 14 March 2027; the overall dates are confirmed, but the day-by-day timings are still provisional. Based on the previous edition, the Drag Queen Gala is expected around Wednesday 10 March and the Cabalgata around Saturday 13 March, both to be confirmed on the official programme. The Drag Queen Gala takes place at the Yumbo Centrum, Avenida de los Estados Unidos 54, 35100 San Bartolome de Tirajana (Playa del Ingles). It is organised by the San Bartolome de Tirajana town council, and most street events are free.
