Axel Hotel Madrid belongs to the Axel chain, the hotel group that made its name with hotels designed for the gay community and open to everyone. It sits on Calle de Atocha, in the Barrio de las Letras, between Puerta del Sol and the Prado, which makes it a practical gay hotel in Madrid for travellers who want to walk to the museums by day and to Chueca or Lavapiés at night.
Rooms come in six categories, from the compact Axel Basic to the Gold Deluxe. The main draw is on the top floor: a rooftop with a pool and the Skybar, where bar service runs in the late afternoon and evening, with longer hours on Friday and Saturday. Downstairs, Bala Perdida is an underground speakeasy that hosts shows, and the Wellnessclub combines a gym with massage treatments.
The hotel takes bookings directly on the Axel website. Its location makes it a natural base during Madrid Pride, so book well ahead if you travel in early July.
