Berkana is an LGBTIQ+ bookshop on Calle de Hortaleza, in the heart of Chueca, the district most visitors know as the gay village of Madrid. Opened in 1993, it is often described as the first bookshop in Spain dedicated to lesbian, gay, bi and trans culture, and it remains a reference for anyone curious about queer writing in Spanish.
The shelves mix novels, poetry, essays, history, biographies, comics and photography books, with a strong feminist section and children’s titles that show diverse families. You will also find films, ebooks and a small range of gifts and merchandise. The team regularly puts together themed reading lists, from bisexuality and trans lives to queer art, which makes it easy to find a starting point even if your Spanish is basic.
Berkana is more than a shop: it has long served as a cultural and community space, with book launches and talks over the years. Drop in while you explore Chueca, the store is a few steps from the Plaza de Chueca and the metro station of the same name.
