Gay’s The Word has been selling books on Marchmont Street, in Bloomsbury near Russell Square, since January 1979. It is the oldest LGBT+ bookshop in the UK and one of the essential stops for anyone looking for gay shopping in London that goes beyond souvenirs. The shelves cover queer fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays, young adult titles and graphic novels.
The shop also has a place in political history. In 1984 and 1985 it was the meeting point of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, the group whose story was told in the film Pride in 2014. Today it continues as a community space, hosting book launches, author talks and readings and it is a regular stop on queer bookshop walks across London.
Opening hours are 11am to 6pm from Tuesday to Saturday and 1pm to 6pm on Sunday, and the shop is closed on Mondays. The staff are happy to recommend titles, and the events page lists what is coming up next.
