Standing on Kennington Lane a few minutes from Vauxhall station, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern is the most storied gay bar in London. Built around 1860 on part of the old Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, the curved Victorian pub became in 2015 the first building in the UK to be listed in recognition of its importance to LGBTQ history. It remains a working venue for everyone in the queer community and their friends.
The programme changes every night of the week. Expect Sunday cabaret, drag and comedy, live music, themed parties and Friday club nights with house DJs, plus seasonal fixtures such as Halloween weekends, a Christmas pantomime and a World AIDS Day event. Tickets for the larger shows are sold online through the venue’s listings, and prices vary with each event.
The RVT also tells its own story through a podcast, If These Walls Could Talk, and it publishes a code of conduct for guests. Opening times depend on the night’s event, so check the official listings before you go, especially early in the week.
