Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2027 is one of the largest carnivals in the world, and its street season runs from 19 to 28 February, under the theme Roma Eterna, the Eternal Empire of Carnival. Twinned with Rio de Janeiro and classed a Festival of International Tourist Interest, it turns the Canarian capital into ten days of parades, music and costume. For the gay crowd its high point is the Drag Gala, one of the most spectacular nights of the entire calendar.
Run by the OAFAR, the events body of Santa Cruz town council, the carnival draws hundreds of thousands of people and has an openly queer-friendly spirit, with drag culture at its centre. The 2027 theme, Roma Eterna, is a nod to the 1987 edition, the first year the carnival adopted a single unifying theme, forty years earlier. Note that the 2027 calendar is unusually shifted, with galas and contests starting as early as 22 January because the main venue was in use until early January.
The Gran Gala Drag, now branded Dragnaval, is the event to plan around. In 2027 it falls on Monday 22 February, the fourth edition of Santa Cruz’s own drag gala.
The gala crowns the Drag Queen of the carnival in a competition famous for its fantasias, sculpture-like costumes several metres high, worn on towering platform heels, an emblem of Canarian drag culture. It is one of the most watched and most crowded nights of the whole festival, staged at the Recinto Ferial on the eve of the great parade. A quick point of accuracy: the long-running drag gala since 1998 is the one in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; Santa Cruz launched its own Dragnaval only in 2024.
Around the gala runs the full carnival: the Cabalgata Anunciadora opens the main week on 19 February, the Coso Apoteosico parades along the Avenida de Anaga on Tuesday 23 February, a local public holiday, and the Entierro de la Sardina closes it in mock-funeral style on 24 February. Murgas, comparsas and music groups fill the weeks with contests at the Recinto Ferial. The whole season builds from a Gala Inaugural on 22 January through the election of the Carnival Queen around 17 February, so the city is in carnival mode for weeks before the street party proper.
The street carnival runs 19 to 28 February 2027, with the Drag Gala on 22 February at the Recinto Ferial, Avenida de la Constitucion 12, and the street party centred on the Plaza de Espana and the city centre. The street events are free; the galas at the Recinto Ferial are ticketed. Tenerife North airport is close to the city, and Santa Cruz has plenty of accommodation, though the carnival weekend fills fast. The 2027 calendar is unusually late, pushed back roughly two weeks because the main venue was occupied into early January, so check the official programme rather than assuming the usual February dates.
